The province of Noord-Brabant has the most cycling path kilometres, followed closely by Gelderland. This correlates with the size of these provinces. When the figures are normalized according to surface area, the 3 suburban counties (Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Utrecht) show 30 to 70 percent more cycling paths than the national average. Bike usage is also high in those areas, according to figures from the CBS (Central Bureau of Statistics). For each kilometre of bike path, 35-60% more kilometres are travelled in the Randstad conurbation than the national average. Cycling paths are busier there.
In Flevoland, Groningen and Friesland, half of all cycling paths do not run alongside a road but follow their own route instead, and are usually recreational bike paths. The three southern provinces have the lowest number of cycling path kilometres. Finally, the province of Flevoland has the greatest number of independent cycling paths per kilometre.
