the last several decades, the width of high-volume streets has
increased from 10 feet to 12 feet, with little reason to support this
expansion. Traffic engineers have argued that making streets 12 feet
wide is safer,
which Jeff Speck notes is “dead wrong. Or, to be more accurate, they
are wrong, and thousands of Americans are dead.” The 12 foot lanes are
contributing to more preventable traffic-caused deaths, rather than
