By Steven Vance, January 2013 Chicago’s Metropolitan Planning Council is on track to planning the city’s first 10 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, which they identified in a report released in 2011 called “Bus Rapid Transit: Chicago’s New Route to Opportunity.” BRT presents enormous growth opportunities for Chicago that extends far beyond moving people from one place to another quickly and efficiently. Installing BRT lines in underdeveloped areas can draw greater demand for residential and commercial development, which can revitalize neighbourhoods that were previously transit deficient. BRT lines also give residents the option of not owning a car, which can allow for more opportunities to walk or cycle in addition to taking public transit. Read the full article here.
