A detailed version of the Transport Day 2013 Program is now available, providing an overview of 50+ speakers and panelists.

EXPRESS HERE YOUR SUPPORT FOR WARSAW STATEMENT ON LOW CARBON TRANSPORT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. (As of 9 November 71 individuals and 40 organizations have done so)

Transport Day 2013 Highlighted Speakers:

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairperson, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

"Carbon dioxide emissions in May 2013 exceeded 400 parts per million having increased by 40% since industrialisation began. Large quantities of greenhouse gases, particularly CO2 are generated by the transport sector. Hence, transport infrastructure, technology and management are an important part of mitigation options to deal with the challenge of climate change."

The Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport and the Bridging the Gap Initiative are organizing Transport Day 2013 during the 19th UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP 19) on 17 November 2013. The full-day event will take place in Hyatt Regency Warsaw Hotel in Warsaw, Poland.

The objectives of the Transport Day in 2013 are:

a) To demonstrate the contribution that transport can make to mitigation and adaptation, specifically in the context of sustainable development;

b) To promote the integration of transport in policy making on climate change mitigation and adaptation under the UNFCCC;

c) To ensure that modalities for financing, capacity building, and technology transfer under the UNFCCC are appropriate for the transport sector.

Background Information

Transport is a key issue that is not yet in fully integrated into the climate change debate. Yet it is,  according to the IEA, the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions, contributing to 13% of global emissions and 23% of all energy related emissions.  This underlines the urgency of large-scale action on transport and climate change.

Within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) international negotiations, the mitigation potential of land transport still does not get enough attention. The efforts of the multi stakeholder initiatives Bridging the Gap and the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport have helped to move the topic forward over the past 4 years and there is now a growing support and a better understanding of the potential for low carbon transport.  Transport is the second largest sector when it comes to Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) under development and submitted to UNFCCC.
The ongoing negotiations for a new global climate change agreement that were kicked of by the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action offer a great opportunity to enhance the integration of sustainable, low carbon transport in the UNFCCC process and modalities.
