Transportation for America released a new report detailing the nation's 69,223 structurally deficient bridges (.pdf) and why such a huge backlog of poor bridges exists. In addition to prioritizing funding for bridge repair and ensuring those funds are used only for that purpose, the report recommends that when bridges are upgraded, they are designed to provide access for people on foot, bikes, or public transportation in addition to those on cars. The report's companion interactive map shows all bridges within a 10-mile radius of an address with structurally deficient bridges highlighted in red.
